Abstract

This book discusses the conditions of news reporting in contemporary information- flooded society. As a sociological study, this book regards agenda-setting through news reporting as contributing to societal meaning construction. It is interested in its relations with other societal processes, such as politics and conflict. The author mainly draws upon strands of systems theoretical studies of the mass media, journalism, politics, terrorism, and armed conflict. In order to take a critical distance from such powerful societal forces and shed light on a practical, life-oriented dimension in civil society, this book discusses citizens’ improvised efforts for problem-solving in their communities under the concept of governing. Finally, this book intends to expand our understanding of media’s potential for supporting such bottom-up processes in society.
