Abstract

This chapter, written from the perspective of a long-time dissertation supervisor, draws upon the author’s many years of experience working with doctoral students. Intended to demystify the doctoral journey, with which very few students have prior experience, it provides advice for doctoral students. The chapter discusses how to select a supervisor and a dissertation topic, examines the nature of positive working relationships, and comments on writing quality and working norms. It reveals the author’s own goals and what she considers her role, as well as her expectations for students’ roles, over the course of the doctoral months and years.
