Abstract

This chapter is a narrative account of one person’s journey as a first-generation student through undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs. The text focuses on the supports needed for and challenges of completing a doctoral program as a first-generation student. In particular, it highlights ways in which family and colleagues provided nonacademic support such as time, motivation, understanding, and physical presence. Through this narrative account, changes to identity are explored as a teacher and doctoral candidate.
