Abstract

The spoliation of Classical-era tombs became an increasingly widespread practice in Late Antiquity, and many newly-built monuments in late antique cities were constructed, in some part, with this spolia. However, little attention has been given to the intersection of spolia with the most substantial construction project in late antique cities, city walls. This paper puts forward a new approach to survey the quantity of reused sepulchral material incorporated in walls and how it was displayed in order to explore the impact wall construction had on cemeteries in Late Antiquity and the relationship of the late antique city to its ancient dead.
