Abstract

This chapter considers the perception of the suburban cemetery in the late antique Roman imagination. More specifically, it investigates how the cemetery was mobilised in Roman polemical texts to legitimise the memory of both the winners and losers of late antique papal schisms. Rome’s extra-mural cemetery spaces were simultaneously associated with the city’s saints and martyrs and linked with foreigners, heretics, and schismatics, and other outsiders. It was precisely this ambiguity that made the cemetery an ideal space for partisan polemicists to reimagine the recent history of Rome’s factionalism. The conflicting portrayals of cemeteries in our sources reflect the battle to control them, both in reality and in Roman memory.
