Romanisation of simplified and traditional Chinese in this study follows the Hanyu pinyin system except for the following cases. Firstly, some better-known forms of names, such as Sun Yat-sen (Sun Zhongshan) and Chiang Kai-shek (Jiang Jieshi). Secondly, citations from English texts, such as Nanking or Peking. In such cases, I modify the original Romanisation into Hanyu pinyin in brackets, such as Nanking (Nanjing). Thirdly, I adopt the original Romanisation of the names or authors when the cover and/or copyright pages clearly indicate the forms of the names, such as Thomas H.C. Lee, as cited in the following pages. In addition, I cite and refer to scholars with Chinese names by presenting their given names after their surnames if the Romanisation follows Hanyu pinyin. Otherwise, I retain the original order. The bibliography follows the same rules.
