This Chapter explores the implications that 3D printing technology, a revolutionary production method, can have on intellectual property (IP) law, with a special focus on EU copyright law and references to US law. More specifically, it will analyze online threats of the unauthorized copying and online dissemination of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) files, often containing IP protectable subject-matter, as well as the subsequent risk of them becoming 3D printed and taking physical form as exact reproductions of the CAD-contained digital design. Finally, this Chapter will make a proposal for the minimization of these issues, based on an alternative form of technology, known as digital watermarking that could complement the current IP anti-infringement legislative framework.
