Samenvatting

Ruimtelijke informatiesystemen informeren over objecten met een vaste plaats op of onder het aardoppervlak. Er wordt onderscheid gemaakt tussen Geografische Informatie Systemen (GIS) en Land Informatie Systemen (LIS). GIS wordt vooral gebruikt voor ruimtelijke analyses en LIS voor ruimtelijke registraties. LIS omvat bv. Kadastrale Informatie Systemen, Gemeentelijke Informatie Systemen en Leiding Informatie Systemen.

Wat de verschillen ook mogen zijn, ruimtelijke informatie systemen informeren altijd over het steeds schaarser wordende produktiemiddel grond en alle objecten die door natrekking daar onroerend mee zijn verbonden.

Door het koppelen van plaatsgegevens van objecten (geometrie) aan kenmerkgegevens van diezelfde objecten worden structuur en intelligentie toegevoegd. Het gegevensbestand wordt daardoor opgevoerd tot informatiesysteem en bruikbaar voor vele toepassingen.
