A Note on Transliteration
In the transliteration of the Ottoman Turkish materials, only the ʿayn and hamza are kept throughout the text, and circumflexes are used to signify lengthened vowels. Unless otherwise noted, all translations and transliterations in the book are my own.
The archival documents are generally cited according to dispatchment dates, but in the case of huge discrepancies, the dates of individual documents are cited instead and footnoted. The Hicri (Lunar) and Rumi (Julian) dates of the cited documents are presented along with Gregorian equivalents in the footnotes. All the archival documents are cited in abbreviated form in the footnotes. The extended versions of them are presented in the bibliography.
All place names are provided with their contemporary equivalents upon their first appearance in the book, except for those I could not identify.
