Seven conference organisers and editors is enough to create a whole community of practice and, while it borders on being solipsistic, they would like to thank each other for all the camaraderie and hard work, often at very short notice. Contributors have also been very quick to reply to an endless series of queries and clarifications that ran over a much longer period than originally anticipated. Ray Land and Erik Meyer have been absolute gentlemen about letting the editorial team find their way but being available whenever their guidance or input was requested.
None of this would have been possible without the conference: we are very grateful to Sandra Lusk and Sonale Karadia at UCL for helping that run smoothly, and particularly to all the participants for sharing in the online experience and supporting authors and editors with their comments on the presentations – and for sticking with us across multiple timezones.
Our thanks also go to Catherine Ross (steering group 2023) who provided our cover photo. John Bennett and Priya Ramesh at Brill have nurtured this publication over its long gestation, and Tanya Izzard also worked hard to create the index: to all of them we are very grateful.
