Abstract

This paper explores the Byzantine expansion to the east, especially to the Armenian realms, from the later 10th until the middle of the 11th centuries, and the problems of the (so-called âmonophysiteâ) national Armenian church under Byzantine control. A new seal type sheds additional light on the policy of the orthodox Byzantine church around the middle of the 11th century in the doukate of Megale Armenia. It mentions a Ioannes Î¼Î¿Î½Î±Ïá½¸Ï ÎºÎ¿ÏÎ²Î¿ÏÎºÎ»Îµá½·ÏÎ¹Î¿Ï ÎºÎ±á½¶ ÎºÎ±Î¸Î·Î³Î¿á½»Î¼ÎµÎ½Î¿Ï Ïá¿Ï Î¼Î¿Î½á¿Ï Ïá¿Ï á½ÏÎµÏÎ±Î³á½·Î±Ï ÎÎµÎ¿Ïá½¹ÎºÎ¿Ï Ïá¿Ï á¼Ïá½±Î¹. On the obverse it shows a bust of the Theotokos (in the Episkepsis-type). Greek á¼Ïá½±Î¹ very likely corresponds with Armenian Arayi, southeast of the Aragac mountain, north-northwest of Yerevan. We do not know if this monastery was an imperial, a patriarchal, or even a private foundation (it could have been established by Ioannes himself). This monastery may have been planned as a spiritual centre of an orthodox community. After the power of the Byzantine empire in Greater Armenia was annihilated (1064), it is likely that the monastery was taken over by the Armenian church.
