Abstract

This paper gives an overview of the tradition of studies dealing with the relationships between Armenians and the Byzantine Empire, with references to some of the major publications in the field. Furthermore, it focuses on the information provided by the translation-literature in Armenian. Indeed, many texts originating in the Byzantine environment were translated from Greek in other languages of the ‘Oriens christianus’, a.o. in Armenian. These translations reveal the connections between Byzantines and Armenians, at the same time as they express the will of the Armenians to develop their own culture. Indeed, the ability to produce texts in their national language is considered by the Armenians as an expression of them taking part to the history of Christianity. The history of the translations, the analysis of the commentaries and of the linguistic peculiarities of these texts narrate the story of an Armenian particularism evolving in the middle of a common cultural heritage, as the case of the translations of the works of Gregory Nazianzen and their commentaries reveal.
