Abstract

Pan-African Education is the education of African people for continental African citizenship; it goes beyond “tribal”, Islamic, colonial, neo-colonial, “educational adaptation” theories from the southern states of the United States in the 19th century, micro-nationalistic systems of Africa’s 1960s founding fathers, and the European and North American hegemonic systems of education that continental Africa has inherited. These systems have made the continent a “Tower of Babel” of educational systems. For a clearer perspective on Pan-African Education, we interrogate several failed systems of educational processes that have plagued Africa for several centuries and I make a “modest proposal” for a more pertinent system of education for continental Africa for the 21st century and beyond. The major systems of education that have been imposed on African people from abroad have all worked to balkanize continental Africa and miseducate African people to be European, American, Islamic, or Arabic. Traditional systems of education in Africa have also been inadequate for continental African integration, because traditional African systems of education have been preoccupied with their own provincial concerns. Thus, the system of educating Mandingoes in West Africa has been solely for the education of Mandingoes, who must now be educated for continental African citizenship. A more progressive system for the education of African people for the 21st century will therefore have to be a more inclusive system that will train and educate African people for a continental African citizenship. This will be the ultimate extension of the ideas of stellar pan-Africanists from the African Diaspora in the western world and from within continental Africa.
