Abstract

Lisa See is currently one of the most popular Chinese American writers, whose Snow Flower and the Secret Fan (2005) tells a fascinating exotic story about an intense friendship between two Chinese heroines, who live in a remote and backward county in the nineteenth century, and about the mysterious history of a womenâs script called ânÃ¼ shu.â This paper interprets spatial narrative content, functions, and cognition in Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and finds that See layered a three-dimensional space model with a physical space of these womenâs lives in ancient China, a psychological space of their imagination, finally a cultural âthirdspaceâ of female community.
