Abstract

Thomas Bernhard and Elfriede Jelinek articulate highly negative images of the self and the world it inhabits, both in a language that is unmistakably their own. This essay employs psychoanalytic theory, in particular object relation theory and its reinterpretation by Alice Miller in her research on the child, to investigate the roots in poisonous pedagogy of their emotional, intellectual and aesthetic depiction of reality, identifying self-disgust (Selbstverachtung) as a creative driver for self-expression.
