Abstract

This chapter examines the relationship between Franz-Josef Murau and his student Gambetti in the novel AuslÃ¶schung / Extinction with reference to Jacques Lacanâs theory of the âfour discoursesâ. The author argues that the âfour discoursesâ help illuminate several important aspects of AuslÃ¶schung: the question of the psychopathology of the protagonist, the unusual (for Bernhard) figure of Gambetti, and the way in which both of these aspects relate to the ending of the novel and Murauâs final break with his family history. Gambetti, by filling the structural role of âanalystâ to Murauâs âhystericâ, mirrors and punctuates Murauâs speech, forcing him to confront his own subjective division and symptomatic enjoyment of his Herkunftskomplex as represented by the master signifier âWolfseggâ. In confronting his own enjoyment, Murau is ultimately able to form a new master signifier around which to organize his subjectivity, replacing âWolfseggâ with âAuslÃ¶schungâ and donating his family estate to the Jewish community of Vienna. The author argues that this discursive structure is a continuation of (and final word on) the central relationship explored in Bernhardâs unfinished draft of the novel that would become Frost, the âLeichtlebig fragmentâ.
