Abstract

This chapter looks at the notion of voice in the fiction of Caryl Phillips and Russell Banks, two authors who know each other personally. An examination of the way in which the two writers use narrative voice makes it possible to understand the sources of their different approaches to the representation of otherness while at the same time perceiving a shared concern with giving fictional expression to empathy. While Banksâs roots can be traced to realist traditions of storytelling in American literature, Phillipsâs narrative technique, often involving the juxtaposition of voices, suggests the impact of dramatic form and his experience of writing plays.
