Abstract

This chapter considers the work of Caryl Phillips and Jenny Erpenbeck by way of the idea of parallel genealogy. It is not that either writer derives inspiration from the other, but rather that through their disparate histories they arrive at fictional features that resonate across distance. Phillipsâs work emerges from a history of imperialism and colonialism, yet touches on other histories, not least Jewish history. Erpenbeck, born in East Germany, is insistently conscious of the history of Jews in her country, and partly because of that turns to questions of current-day refugees. Other points of comparison include the writersâ approach to identity and biography, and the complex forms of their work. The particular works I consider are Phillipsâs A Distant Shore and The Lost Child; and Erpenbeckâs Go, Went, Gone and The End of Days. The characteristic focus of each is on what I term the space of crossing.
