Abstract

It is contended that presents his understanding of an African philosophy of higher education will engender teaching and learning underscored by rhythmic caring. In referring to rhythmic caring, it is argued that university teachers are encouraged to provoke students to proffer their own understanding even if it is an opposing view. They must also allow students the space to step into the silence rather than fill it with their own thoughts, opinions and truths. Such a notion of ‘rhythmic caring’, is further expanded to the being and pedagogical practices of a teacher. Moreover, an argument is proffered for rhythmic pedagogy that speaks of providing vulnerable care for the student whereby the student is invited to co-belong in a community. Simultaneously, a teacher is responsible for inducing students into the technical skills and competencies they should develop as future professionals. In this chapter a pedagogy of rhythmic care is explored that can be deepened within an African philosophy of higher education can be deepened along the lines of vulnerable co-belonging (equality) and the development of technical skills (academic rigour and quality).
