Abstract

This paper discusses the role of derision in the Socratic dialogues of Plato as a mechanism capable of advancing the philosophic discussion. It analyses selected occurrences of the verb καταγελάω and its cognates to explore the contexts in which derision plays a role and enhances philosophical positions. The specific joy derived from ridicule is assessed in the dialogues, as well as its actors and recipients. Socrates appears to often be the object of ridicule, yet he seems capable of reversing the direction of derision, thus advancing the discussion in his favour. This charismatic action is addressed by referring to specific passages in which the verb καταγελάω and cognates assume centrality in the discussion.
