Abstract

In Part 2, focus is turned to the marchandise de tabletterie, the professional materials of Chicart that make up over half of the inventory. The sections address questions from across the spectrum of making — starting with the unworked and ending with the ready for sale. From the beginning of the productive process, both the globally sourced raw materials in Chicart’s stock and the tools used to transform this material into finished objects are explored. From there, two overarching categories of objects are examined: the fun of games and toys, and the faith of objects related to religious practice. For each group, the inventory is used extensively to attempt “reconstructions” of some of these lost objects.
