Abstract

In the winter of 1916/17, Landauer gave a popular lecture on Strindberg’s Historical Miniatures, an extraordinary book portraying visionary scenes from the birth of Moses to the French Revolution. Landauer subtly develops Strindberg’s ideas, focusing on the anarchic, egalitarian, and messianic Abrahamic promise: In thy name shall all the nations of the world be blessed (Gen 22:18). The promise concerns all humanity, not only the seed of Abraham. It is based on the Abrahamic doctrine of Unity, which is not primarily about the Unity of God, but rather the Unity of all human beings. The French Revolution announced that the Abrahamic promise was about to come true. However, it has not yet come true; it remains contingent on faith and will. Landauer speaks of the vocation of “we Jews”: “The circuitous […] and dangerous ways of humankind […] are also our ways […] [but] we have our own special task.” The special task of the Jew is to remember the anarchic, egalitarian, and messianic promise of Abraham. It is a promise for the entire world, but an eternal command for the Jewish people.
