Abstract

In 1907, Gustav Landauerâs essay Die Revolution appeared in Martin Buberâs âDie Gesellschaftâ series. Next to The Call to Socialism (1911), this essay is considered Landauerâs second major work on political theory. This essay will unpack the concept of revolution as an essential concept of modern European thought and at the same time as a concept of its crisis (and the crisis of Europe). My contribution aims to show that this essay, beyond its content, practices a writing method that takes up Mauthnerâs scepticism of language and develops it into a mode of sceptical political philosophising in which the figure of the reader is inscribed. In the light of this writing-reading practice, canonical traditions of thought and knowledge become sceptically reformulable.
