This volume is the outcome of a conference, “From Trustworthiness to Secular Beliefs: Changing Concepts of xin 信 from Traditional to Modern Chinese,” held at Freie Universität Berlin, on 9–11 June 2017.1 It was followed by an additional editorial meeting of the contributors in February 2018, again in Berlin. We are grateful for the generous funding of both workshops by the Center of Research Strategy (CRS) of the Freie Universität Berlin. In particular, we thank also Dr. Johanna Lüdde and Mr. Richard Ellguth for their support in organizing both meetings.

The editors are grateful for the support of Dr. Eugenia Werzner for her continuous editorial work, including the preparation of the index with the additional support by Jonas Leferink (student at FU Berlin) as well as for the translation of one article by Thomas Fröhlich, and for the English proof-reading of most of the articles written by non-English native speakers by Anna Clart.

Finally, we would like to thank Qin Higley, Stephanie Carta, and Dove Morissette for their kind and patient support at Brill.
