Abstract

Today, the Grand-ducal gallery of Oldenburg has nearly been forgotten, although it once attained to a level of international importance. Wilhelm Bode played an important role in both the rise and the decline of the gallery. Since the 1860s, he continuously expressed his interest in the relatively young collection by enriching it with a painting by Caravaggio and by writing a catalogue of its paintings that contributed to both the gallery’s fame and Bode’s standing as an art historian – a win-win situation. Once the political tides had turned in 1918, however, the now former grand duke dissolved his gallery. He once again asked Bode for his expertise, now to sell most of the collection in the Netherlands, leaving the museum in Oldenburg as a dismantled torso. While Bode publicly denounced the sale of important collections from Germany, at the same time he humbly followed the call, received both a painting as a gift and a substantial honorarium, while his expertise accelerated the sale of the gallery. The history of the Oldenburg collection reveals Bode’s double-act as an ambitious art historian, museum director and a political voice, as well as an unscrupulous and hypocritical agent between the art market and the museum world.
