Abstract

On the basis of unpublished archival material from the Zentralarchiv in Berlin this essay highlights once again Wilhelm Bodeâs lifelong influence as a major player in the international art market scene as well as his pivotal role in the formation of German museums during the Kaiserreich through the âharnessing of market forces to German cultureâ (Peter M. McIsaac). Spanning four decades (1880sâ1920s), the archival sources considered in this essay will inform on Bodeâs lesser known connections with two Italian collectors active at the end of the nineteenth century: a nouveau riche Italian Ã©migrÃ¨ Achille Chiesa (1851â1920) and a local collector Pietro Foresti (1854â1926) from the provincial North-Italian town of Carpi (Modena).

In moving the discussion to the peripheral centers of trade (Carpi) this contribution brings to bear the constant tension between domestic and international forces and between private and public property which innervated the art market arena on the Italian peninsula. The analysis of the archival evidence put forward here suggests that at the root of Bodeâs success was his ability of approaching the art market both horizontally â from museums, government officials and scholars, as well as vertically â from high end collectors and world class dealers to local shop owners and amateurs. In reiterating the power of Wilhelm Bodeâs global network, the essay highlights once again the immense influence Bode had in the cultural system at the turn of the last century.
