Acknowledgements
The chapters in this volume are based on papers given at a conference, Middle Eastern and Balkan Mobilities in the Interwar Period (1918–1939), held at the Skilliter Centre for Ottoman Studies, Newnham College, Cambridge, in September 2018. We should like to thank all those who participated in the conference and made it such a particularly enjoyable and stimulating experience and to all those who contributed chapters to this volume. We should also like to thank the Skilliter Centre and Newnham College for providing us with such an excellent academic environment.
For the cover of the book, we have used a photograph from the Eckstein Albums in the Skilliter Centre collection which shows Albert Eckstein (1891–1950), a German Jewish paediatrician who fled from Nazi Germany and became a leading paediatrician in Turkey, sitting with a muhtar in İscehisar, Afyonkarahisar in 1937. We are most grateful to the Eckstein family for the donation of Albert Eckstein’s photo albums to the Skilliter Centre.
As always, we thank Nicolette van der Hoek and Nienke Brienen-Moolenaar at Brill, with whom it has been a pleasure to work on this volume.
