Åuvre profane, les MÃ©moires de Charlotte Arbaleste peuvent cependant Ãªtre envisagÃ©s comme une Åuvre spirituelle de mÃ©ditation de la grÃ¢ce. Lâautrice les considÃ¨re en effet comme un exercice de mÃ©ditation de lâexpÃ©rience vÃ©cue. LâÃ©criture de soi sâinscrit alors dans le paradigme de la mÃ©ditation autobiographique pratiquÃ©e par Calvin dans le commentaire des psaumes. Les MÃ©moires reprÃ©sentent ainsi lâexpÃ©rience chrÃ©tienne de lâincarnation Ã travers une subjectivitÃ© fÃ©minine. En montrant le rÃ´le thÃ©ologique des mÃ¨res, le texte littÃ©raire permet ainsi Ã Charlotte Arbaleste dâexercer une position dâautoritÃ© spirituelle dans la famille Duplessis-Mornay. En consacrant son rÃ©cit Ã la vie de son mari Philippe Duplessis-Mornay, lâÃ©crivaine reste cependant dans une position dâhumilitÃ© conforme aux attentes de lâÃglise calviniste dans laquelle elle a eu une place problÃ©matique lors de son excommunication Ã Montauban.

Abstract

Despite their profane dimension, Charlotte Arbalesteâs Memoirs may be considered as a spiritual meditation dedicated to Godâs saving grace. The author presents her work as a meditative exercise on lived experience. Therefore, writing on the self follows the principles of autobiographical meditation practiced by Calvin in his Commentary on the Psalms. The Memoirs thus depict the Christian experience of incarnation from the viewpoint of feminine subjectivity. Emphasizing the theological role played by mothers, the literary text allows Charlotte Arbaleste to claim spiritual authority in the Duplessis-Mornay family. By writing the narrative of her husband Philippe Duplessis-Mornayâs life, she maintains a humble position as befitted a woman in the Calvinist Church, keeping a low profile after she was excommunicated in Montauban.
