Abstract

Starting with the L. Michael White’s observations on the interrelationship of moral example and moral advice and letter writing, this paper argues that constructions of the letter writer’s self constantly change, depending on the historical and literary contexts in which a particular letter is read. The test case is Paul’s correspondence with his friends at Philippi in three contexts: the original three letters written by Paul, the second century edition compiled by the Philippians into the canonical letter known today, and among Pauline and Deutero-Pauline letters in late-antiquite letter collections. In each case, the letters mirror a becoming martyr’s self and respectively guides his addressees to moral success.
