Abstract

This chapter outlines the political and intellectual climate in Iraq and Northeastern Iran during the second/eighth and the first half of the third/ninth century. In the contemporary studies about Muslim, this aspect has been treated sporadically and briefly, on the assumption that it forms the readerâs implicit historical competence and background theological knowledge. The political and scholarly developments in Muslimâs lifetime certainly need more attention, in view of the recent achievements in the study of Islamic intellectual history. These include Van Essâ seminal Theology and society, Melchertâs Formation of the Sunni schools of law, and Montgomery Wattâs oft-neglected Formative period of Islamic thought. Mapping Muslimâs historical background will help us better contextualize his attitudes towards the dogmatic and political issues that played a central role in the formation of the traditionalist current and the Sunni identity at large.
