Abstract

Animated sculptures of the crucified Christ, as well as late medieval passion panoramas are works of art intended as highly engaging the viewers. The first are characterized by unusual construction enabling movements of selected body parts of the Saviour. The second by the unusual composition, presenting numerous scenes of Christ’s passion in a simultaneous way, in and outside Jerusalem. The way these works were created forced the viewers to perceive it in an active way, prompted to interact with them, engaged the viewers’ senses. Both the sculptures of the Crucified Christ and the Passion panoramas prove that late medieval art was often interactive, and the nature of numerous works of art from that period was ‘more contemporary’ that we may assume.
