Abstract

This chapter follows Henry Adams on his pilgrimage to Chartres to contrast the way in which modern Americans like Adams have read the images of medieval devotion with the liturgical context in which they were originally designed. If for Adams, Mary was a great “force,” that force for him was primarily one of feeling. For the designers of the windows in which she was represented at Chartres, the mystery of Mary’s “force” lay rather in the scriptures sung about her in the liturgy, particularly the psalms.
