Abstract

The Semi-Pelagian controversy in the fifth and sixth centuries roiled the Gallic church, split between Augustinians who emphasized the necessity of grace to salvation, and the semi-Pelagians, who insisted upon the necessity of works and the freedom of the will. Most Gallic churchmen were skeptical of the more austere Augustinian doctrines, a skepticism that was not allayed by the Council of Orange in 529, which laid out a mild Augustinianism as orthodox. Fortunatus in his sermon on the Lord’s Prayer took the side of the Augustinians in a remarkable polemic against semi-Pelagianism, and in fact went even further than the decrees of Orange. It becomes clear from this polemic that Fortunatus held to a strongly Augustinian doctrine of the freedom of the will, opposing the views of his contemporaries in Gaul and drawing on his education in Italy. He used Prosper of Aquitaine and Caesarius of Arles as sources to argue for his position.
