Abstract

The Apostles’ Creed (the Symbol) was an important part of Christian catechesis in Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. The text of the Symbol itself varied up until the time of Charlemagne depending on the time and place of the creed’s use. Yet the text of the sermons that almost invariably surrounded the text of the Symbol itself, explaining it, was of much greater significance to Christians of the time. These sermons used many common phrases and codes, but also could branch out into doctrinal areas that their preachers thought important. The greatest of these sermons was that by Rufinus of Aquileia, whose Expositio symboli was frequently summarized and borrowed by later authors. This lays the foundation for understanding Fortunatus’ own adaptation of the Symbol sermon.
