Abstract

This article delineates Brazilian poet-thinker Haroldo de Campos’ intellectual itinerary as he engaged Chinese ideogrammic poetics. After Ernest Fenollosa and Ezra Pound, Haroldo presents a multifaceted, exceptional case in Western poetics, one that has not yet received a comprehensive close study. Combining textual and archival analysis, I first inspect the role of the ideogram in the conception of Concrete Poetry, then illustrate how Haroldo’s lifelong reading of Chinese poetry fostered his “ideogrammic” poetics in criticism and translation. I conclude by considering Haroldo’s theoretical contribution that draws upon Fenollosa, Saussure, and Peirce to approach the concrete ideogram.
