Walter Benjamin, one of the most cited literary critics of modernity, is usually labeled either a crypto-Marxist or a Jewish mystic of sorts. Instead, this work traces the importance of Benjaminâs study of China on his literary and philosophical system. It touches on how Benjaminâs early 20th century German-Jewish intellectual milieu engaged with Chinese literature and culture. Through this milieu, a key to Benjaminâs corpus lies in his consumption of Chinese fairy tales, Daoist philosophy, and studies on Chinese history. Benjamin refuses mastery or complete knowledge of âthe otherâ in order to uproot, unsettle, and enrich cultural production.
