Abstract

American Indian and all indigenous peoples have always viewed animals as “relatives” and potential teachers and healers. This is in stark contrast to the Western notion of animals as “objects” without sentience, emotions and intelligence. Current research with animals in a number of disciplines continually challenges many of the beliefs about them long-held by science and Western culture. When the gap becomes too great between current paradigms and new research phenomena, old structures must undergo radical change. Many scholars in human-animal studies face an interesting challenge in making a place for science and phenomena that does not fit with current scientific models of reality. Non-Western, indigenous paradigms may provide a philosophical foundation for understanding the nature of human-animal relationships, particularly their role as healers and teachers, as well as guide ethical principles to protect and respect them in that scenario.
