Abstract

I address from a training perspective the progression of drills, exercises and routines that are intended to make horses malleable on the ground and under saddle. The case in point is a horse who has inadvertently hurt his owner and now appears in need of such training. The course of this training is described initially as a process of reining-in Valentino’s energetic exuberance for the sake of gaining the controls thought necessary to realize the horse’s movement potential. But just as the accident with his owner indicated some remedial action, reining-in Valentino’s motions exposes a tipping point to disciplinary power. Freeing up his movements requires far less reliance on the equipment of training and much greater awareness of the moment-to-moment registers of affective resonance. What is revealed pathically within these interactions, and beyond disciplinary power, is a vital, communal power.
