Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the Art Center at The University of Tokyo and examines the potential for establishing new educational programs incorporating the practice of arts at universities for non-arts-major students. It reviews one specific case of a practical arts course from a cognitive perspective and suggests that the art-based approach, which expands educational programs in the university, is not an optional but indispensable part of higher education.
