Abstract

Since the establishment of the tributary system in the frontier ethnic areas during the Qin and Han dynasties, through several runs of disintegration and unification of the nation under the centralized dynasties, the national structure of the ancient Chinese dynasty had changed from the main centralized system in parallel with the border tributary system to the centralized and unitary system from the inland to the borderland. The tributary system in the northeast frontier ethnic areas had experienced five stages of development: the initial construction period, the comprehensive development period, the mature period, the transformation and decline period, and the revival and termination period. It had been constructed since the Qin and Han dynasties, and had formed a governance model in which various tributary systems coexist and were jointly managed by the central and local governments. The tributary system in the form of Jimifuzhou (Bride Prefecture) in the northeast ethnic minorities of the Tang Dynasty opened the process of the transformation of the main frontier governance system from the tributary system to the ethnically constructed system. In the early period of the Qing Dynasty, the tributary system was finally replaced by the ethnically constructed regions and the tributary system of the northeastern frontiers, which had existed for nearly two thousand years, was finally abolished.
