Abstract

This essay seeks to develop an ethical way of reading genocidal texts in Holy Writ in the form of a Sunday sermon, embedded in the context of Christian worship. Homilies continue to be by far the most widespread and influential way that biblical interpretation is encountered, with hundreds of millions of people exposed to them at least from time to time, all over the world. The sermon first focuses on the brutal reality of mass killings, taking the massacre at the end of the First Crusade as a particularly horrifying example of how not to read the biblical texts. It then provides a theological, Christological rationale for uncompromisingly non-violent readings. Finally, it draws on the spiritual readings of the early church to suggest ways in which these texts retain a fruitful significance for contemporary spirituality.
