Abstract

How the Greeks waged war is one of the most studied topics in the field of ancient history. Within this, though, there is a tendency to see âGreek warfareâ as something practiced uniformly -- or near uniformly -- throughout the Greek diaspora in the Archaic and Classical periods. This approach ignores the nuances to warfare in different regions and has led to standards most applicable to Athens and Sparta being applied to other areas of the Mediterranean.

This chapter examines the place of warfare in Magna Graecia in this narrative. While the Western Greeks may not have conducted warfare in entirely alien ways to their cousins in the Aegean, there are many considerations which need to be made before we can apply any universalisms to Sicily and southern Italy. The results of my study show the ways in which Magna Graecia does and does not fit into the existing Greek warfare narrative. I highlight the differences and provide a survey of evidence from the earliest migrations of Hellenes to the central Mediterranean to the fourth century BCE. In this, I lay the foundations of a new narrative of Greek warfare, one that is centred on Magna Graecia and challenges some of the assumptions within the more traditional narrative.
