Abstract

This chapter considers Sallustâs character-sketches â that is, the detailed portraits he offers of individual figures in the narrative. Based on detailed examination of the portraits of Catiline, Sempronia and Jugurtha I argue that Sallustâs sketches are unified by their focus on the perversion of good qualities, and that the figures whom Sallust identifies for portraits all represent potentially outstanding individuals driven into immoral activities. In the second part of the chapter I consider this repeated theme against the complex assessment of Republican values which Sallust develops in his works, to suggest that Sallust throughout develops an argument that the key quality of gloria had been perverted in contemporary Roman society; I also consider the relationship of Sallustâs works here to the contemporary discussion of gloria in Ciceroâs de Officiis. Building on this comparison, I offer a new reading of the comparison between Caesar and Cato which forms the analytical high-point of the Bellum Catilinae, offering a historicised reading of the complexities of Sallustâs assessment against the complex morality of his day.
