The essay is part memoir, part visual rhetoric, part collage of nostalgia and academic insights. The author, like many of us, is as much of his working-class family and neighborhood as he is an English professor. He admits, he usually says “teacher.” As he puts it in the essay, “I assume I’ll look arrogant if I say I’m a professor.” The aversion to the term “professor”? “That’s Van Buren Street talking some.” The chapter illustrates how closely class can be tied to place.
