Abstract

This chapter marks out several aspects of the Holiness Churches of Appalachia’s serpent-rituals that emerge from the Appalachian South’s working-class experience of job scarcity and economic hardship. This essay doesn’t parse out the specifics of such economic systems via labor studies, but, using direct oral histories and video recordings of services from the Hood and Williamson archives at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, it traces how the lived experience of those who consider themselves working-class at the fringes of mainstream culture interanimates their religious practice. It concludes that such forms of religious rhetoric disrupt distinctions between subject/environment/discourse or the personal/cultural/discursive or even between the human (the pastor/congregation) and nonhuman (the serpents, Lord/Jesus/God). What emerges from such disruption is a singular rhetoricity, an underlying openness, a capacity to act and to be acted upon that is radically relational and exposed.
