Abstract

Roddy Doyle’s 1987 novel The Commitments and its sequels – ‘The Deportees’ and The Guts – dramatize central questions about musical style as a marker of identity and history. The trilogy charts the journey of the aging protagonist and musical impresario Jimmy Rabbitte, from his early days as a manager of Dublin Soul band The Commitments, through his middle adult years as family man and leader of the immigrant world music collective The Deportees, and to his later incarnation as father and record business employee with a mid-life crisis and intestinal cancer. In these narratives, Doyle depicts Jimmy’s evolution from an all-pervasive and uncommitted postmodern irony to a more complicated and unexpectedly sincere post-postmodern sensibility. This transformation helps make sense of the conflicted debate about what comes after postmodern culture. The narratives suggest that rigid periodization does not suffice: there is no ‘after’ postmodernism, as digital culture reconfigures our sense of both history and time. For Jimmy and for us, all cultural productions are instantly available, suggesting that postmodernism, like all previous cultural formations, has been supplemented but not overcome.
