Abstract

This contribution looks at the role that popular music has played in the construction of identity and/or subjectivity in British and Irish fiction since the late 1980s. It identifies problematic conceptualisations of music-related identity proposed in academic criticism, offers a short review of approaches to identity within Cultural Studies, delineates major patterns of constructing identity/subjectivity in selected texts, and further considers a number of fictional texts which suggest popular music does not hold an important role in identity-building, but instead works on a different level of selfhood, and with ambivalent results. Texts analysed include Roddy Doyle’s The Commitments (1987), Zadie Smith’s NW (2012), Jonathan Coe’s Middle England (2018), and Robert Galbraith’s Strike novels.
