The purpose of the survey reported in this article was to gather information about technical writers, their working environment, and the incorporation of technical documentation in industry. 119 manufacturing companies and 58 computer companies participated in the survey, which in total employed approximately 1,400 technical writers. The results provide information about the largest group of professionals ever included in any survey in Germany to date. Although multiple talents are required and the production of technical documentation also takes place under extreme constraints of time and money, the respondents complained about a lack of recognition and career opportunities. Two ways of improving the quality of technical documentation are advocated. First, the prestige of technical writers has to be increased by company heads and managers, and second, technical writers must be trained for their job, either by establishing specific technical writing programmes at colleges or universities, or by incorporating technical writing courses into technical courses.
