Abstract

This chapter traces the trajectory of the philosophical making of subjectivity in twentieth-century East Asia (China and Japan, in particular) by focusing on the polemic readings on the Treatise on Awakening MahÄyÄna Faith by the China Inner Studies Institute figures (Ouyang Jingwu and LÃ¼ Cheng) and New Confucians (Xiong Shili and Mou Zongsan). The debate reflects the perennial conflict between Huayan/Chan and YogÄcÄra in Sinitic Buddhism, on the one hand, and between Principle-centered Learning and the Mind-centered Learning in Neo-Confucianism, on the other hand. This chapter shows how this cross-traditional division finally lead to the formation of two conflicting theories of subjectivity in modern East Asian philosophy.
