Abstract

Philippi is a privileged place for studying the evolution of the religious landscape from Augustus to Paul and beyond. The colonial authorities who reorganized the religious life of the colony (42 BCE after the famous battle) did not take into account the religious past of he old city in the shaping of the identity of those living, at least in the urban center. The official pantheon of the colony is made up of Roman or Greco-Roman gods. Greek, Thracian or foreign cults were relegated either in the margins of the city or in the countryside. The spatial distribution of the cults reflects, at least at the beginning, the social and ethnic differentiation, but these marks of distinction diminish over time and the interactions begin progressively to take new forms in the social and religious life and create new, complicated identities.
